CHAPTER FIFTEEN

“Clinton, where are we going?” Alex asked as they crossed the parking lot.

“I’m just following orders,” he said. “And your sisters are bossy, just like you. You taught them well.”

“Now you’re just being rude.”

Clinton shrugged. “I told Nina we should play hooky one day while you were gone and she went off. Just because Alex isn’t here, it doesn’t mean you can slack off. She going to blame me. I worked every day, just so you know.”

“I expected nothing less,” she replied with a smile.

“There’s something different about you,” he said as he nodded toward the picnic table where her three sisters were sitting. “Keep it up and be nice to my wife.”

Alex looked at the smirks on her sisters’ faces. “I make no promises.”

Clinton gave her a quick kiss on the cheek, then crossed over to his wife, Nina, and gave her a passionate kiss before waving to his sisters-in-law. “See y’all later,” he said, then headed back inside.

Alex eyed her sisters suspiciously, especially Yolanda. “Where are the babies?”

“With their father and aunties. Chuck’s sisters came to visit and they decided I needed a break. So, Robin said you finally got some,” Yolanda said with a grin.

“Robin!” Alex shrieked.

Robin kicked Yolanda underneath the table. “That is not what I said.”

“You shouldn’t have said anything,” Alex said.

“But is it true?” Nina asked. “You, Alexandria the Great, got on a boat and had sex with a stranger?”

Yolanda nudged Nina. “Yes, she did. Look at her face; she’s smiling. I didn’t even know your lips could do that.”

“Why are y’all interrupting my work day?”

Robin shook her head. “Well, most normal people would’ve taken the first day back from their vacation off. But since this is your first time, you didn’t know the rules.”

“Stop it. Dad said we have a meeting with the architect today about the designs for the remodel. I don’t have time to play with y’all.”

“Well,” Robin said, “I have some news.”

Nina smiled knowingly, while her sisters looked confused. “What is it?” Yolanda asked. “And it better not be you’re leaving Logan again because ...”

“Shut up and let her talk,” Nina said.

“Logan and I are just fine and neither of us is going anywhere,” Robin said, then rolled her eyes. “But we are expanding our family.”

“Aww,” Yolanda exclaimed.

Robin smiled. “We’re starting the process of adopting a baby boy.”

“Wow,” Alex said. “And both of you want this?”

Robin nodded. “It’s a little weird how it all happened. Logan’s partner in his practice also works at a women’s clinic in North Charleston. One of the women he was treating also had a heart condition. Logan joined her health-care team and she was saying she couldn’t take care of the baby with all her health issues. Logan tried to help her with finding the right social services programs.”

“What about her family?” Alex asked.

Tears filled Robin’s eyes. “They turned their back on her. Her father is a big preacher in Dallas. He put her on a plane to Charleston with ten thousand dollars and told her not to return.
